Vertical Text Orientation

How do I align text vertically but retain a horizontal
font orientation without having to hit the carriage return
after each character? The Vertical Text feature in Visio
2002 aligns the text vertically but also rotates each
letter 90 degrees clockwise so that you have to turn your
head to read it. Also, with the carriage return method, it
puts more spacing between the characters than what is
normal in a horizontal text. This can only be adjusted by
reducing the line spacing. In other words, a lot of work
to get the effect I want. Is there an easier way to get
the appearance I want in Visio and/or Word?

You can probably achieve the effect you want by adjusting the width of the text block of you shape. To do this

1. Enter text on your shape, then click on the Text Block Tool. This tool allows you to re-size, rotate, and move a shape's text block (the rectangle that contains a shape's text)
2. Using this tool, grab the side of the text block and re-size it smaller, until the text is forced to line-wrap after every character
3. Depending on the font, font-size, etc. you may also want to experiment with different horizontal alignment settings (Left, Center, Right...) in the Format | Text | Paragraph dialog, and with changing the Left / Right margins to "0 pt" in the Format | Text | Text Block dialog

If you can't find the Text Block Tool, click on the little downward arrow next to the Text Tool (the one that has the "A" icon). This will reveal the Text Block Tool, which is "underneath" the Text Tool. Its icon is an "A" with a circular arrow around it
